Ah…the name that started it all. The boys’-name-for-a-girl/unisex name, the surname name, the place name…basically, all the biggest naming trends of the last decade and a half or so. While some of those fads have passed, Madison still remains a favorite (nickname Maddie is right in line with the sounds of today’s popular names). The name shot up the charts through the late ’80s, ’90s, and early ’00s, possibly inspired by Daryl Hannah’s mermaid character in Splash (1984), who chose the name for her human form after seeing it on a street sign in New York. In response, her companion says, “But Madison isn’t a name!” It sure is now, buddy.
