meaning: Joy of the Father
This Old Testament name, used by one of David’s wives, was also a traditional term for a lady’s maid…meaning, it spent a long time not being popular. And while Abigail sounds like another member of the trendy grandma-names-are-cool-again tribe, it disappeared entirely from the charts during the early twentieth century. It finally started its comeback in the ’70s and ’80s though, rising rapidly through the ’90s and peaking (for now) at number four in 2005 -- just another tale of redemption.
