Ok, see if you can follow: Alexa is a shorter form of Alexandra… which comes from the male Alexander… which stems from the Greek Alexandros… which can be broken down into alexo (to defend) and aner (man). So! We’ve got Alexa, defender of man. While the meaning suggests toughness, we find Alexa the most feminine of all the Alex names (not that femininity and toughness can’t go together, of course). With similar name Alexis in the top 20, it also feels pretty fresh, despite dropping from its peak of 39 in ’06. Similar to Alexis (and many of the other feminine Alex names), it first appeared in the middle of the last century, and made its biggest jump from the ‘80s to the ‘90s.
