origin: Japanese

Origin: Hebrew

Meaning: To flow down

This name comes (surprise!) from the river Jordan, and also stems from the Hebrew word “yarad” (to flow down)…so, it’s a watery name. Jesus was baptized in the river’s water, and when the crusaders visited the area, they brought both the water and the name back to Europe for their children. Jordan spiked in popularity for both boys and girls in the ’90s, but has always been (and still is) more widely used for boys.

Current U.S. popularity rank: 2010: 48
