origin: Hebrew

Origin: French

Meaning: Stone Worker, Brick Layer

After hanging out in the upper half of the top thousand names for the good part of the last century, Mason jumped to an average ranking of 115 in the ’90s. It’s been shooting up the charts ever since, and has been firmly in the top 50 since ’05. It’s also a popular celeb choice -- Kourtney Kardashian used it in late ’09, and Kelsey Grammer has a little girl with the name (no concern about gender confusion in that family, clearly). Mason’s one of those last-name-as-a-profession names -- it means “stone worker.” In Old English, the similar Macian means “to make.” As it continues to gain popularity, we’re ready to officially crown Mason as the new Jason.

Current U.S. popularity rank: 2010: 35
