Bravo is a boy’s name of Italian and Spanish origin, and is also a Spanish surname. It most likely derives from a combination of the Latin words pravus (bad, improper) and barbarus (brutal). The name was given to a type of hired assassin in Italy in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In modern Italian, however, it means “good, skillful,” and is shouted out by audiences as a way to applaud performers.
