Origin:Irish
Meaning:Sweet
Saibh is a girl’s name of Irish origin, meaning “sweet.” Also spelled Sadhbh, Sadb, Sadbh, and Saoibh, and sometimes anglicized as Sive, this lovely name has a long history. In Irish mythology, Sadhbh was the mother of the hero Oisín by Fionn mac Cumhaill. After refusing the love of Fear Doirche, the Dark Druid of the Tuatha Dé Danann, she was transformed into a doe for three years. Sadhbh was also the name of an ancient Irish princess, the daughter of King Donnchadh of Ossory. More recently, the 1959 play Sive by John B. Keane used the anglicized form of the name for its main character. With its lovely meaning and fascinating historical, mythological, and literary connections, it’s no surprise that Saibh remains a popular name in Ireland today.
