Shannan is a gender-neutral given name and surname of Irish origin. It’s a variant of Shannon, the name of Ireland’s longest river, which was anglicized from an tSionainn, “the Sionann,” or Abhainn na Sionainne, “Sionann’s river.” In Irish mythology, Sionann was the goddess of the river, and her name means “possessor of wisdom.” If you have roots in one of the 11 Irish counties that this ancient river flows through, why not pay tribute by naming baby Shannan?
